Just a Touch of History

Most people rely on some type of heating system to keep their homes and business comfortable in the cold months of winter, unfortunately, most don't know how these marvels of modern technology work.

Forced air central heating systems as their name implies, uses fans to "force" air into the inhabited spaces. The forced air heating system was first introduced around 1935 as a system that utilized coal to generate heat. Shortly after it's introduction, later these systems were upgraded to burn oil and gas as the heat generating medium.

How Heating Works

How Heating Systems Works

In more contemporary forced air heating systems, natural gas is burned to produce warm air that is distributed throughout the structure via plenums, ductwork and vents. A closer look at the components within the heating unit will allow for a better understanding of the system's operation.

When the thermostat reaches a certain present temperature it will switch the heating system on by opening an electronic valve allowing natural gas to flow into the Gas Burner assembly from the Natural Gas Pipe. If the system utilizes a pilot-less ignition, a piezoelectric element will emit a spark and the gas will ignite and burn. The Induced Draft Fan is switched on and draws air through the gas burner and combustion chamber. After passing through the gas burner, the surplus gasses are pushed by the Induced Draft Fan to the outside of the structure by way of the vent pipe that passes through the structure's roof.

The heat generated by the Gas Burner is pushed into the Heat Exchanger where the Circulating Fan pushes cool air that becomes heated by the Exchanger through the ductwork and vents. The Circulating Fan is what "forces" the air into the structure and surplus structure air returns to the heating unit by way of a filter which removes contaminates from this air.
